The forming ground

where this sits →

The Forge.

Where members become multipliers — the formation of the people who will go on to develop others.

Your guide opens this with you — formation is opened with you by a guide who has seen your actual work, because readiness is recognised by a person and never claimed by one. What the formation consists of is published here for anyone.

Developing another human being is a skill. Nobody should be handed a person to form simply because they are enthusiastic, senior, or available. This place exists so that everyone who ends up responsible for someone else was first formed, supervised, corrected, and then deliberately commissioned.

What formation consists of

  • Apprenticeship

Alongside someone already doing it. Watching the real thing, including the parts that go badly, rather than studying a description of it.

  • Practice under supervision

Doing it yourself with someone watching who will tell you the truth about it. This is the long part.

  • Commissioning

A marked, public moment when a steward says you are ready. It is conferred by a person, never by completing anything.

What it forms people toward

Three roles, and all three are service rather than status. None of them is a rank, none of them is permanent, and each one is scoped and reviewed.

  • The Bridge, as the mentor rather than the mentee.
  • The Hearth, as the guide of a small group — which is how a Hearth becomes able to split.
  • Stewardship of a place, held for a term, with authority that is scoped, visible and temporary.

What this place is held to

  • Readiness is recognised by a steward, on evidence. It is not applied for and cannot be self-declared.
  • Formation is supervised throughout. Nobody is left to work out how to hold a person by trial and error on a real person.
  • The measure of a mentor is not how many people depend on them, but how many became able to do this themselves.
  • Excellence that ends in you is treated as a failure of the system, not a triumph of the individual.
  • Every commissioning is public, and so is every release. Both show the system reproducing itself.

Nobody is in formation

Nobody is being formed here, nobody has been commissioned, and no readiness has been recognised in anyone — because no member has yet done the work that readiness would be recognised on.

There is no application, no cohort and no list. This is the deliberate order of things: people cross, people practise, people are witnessed, and only then does anyone stand here. Starting at this end would produce exactly the credentialled-but-unformed leadership the whole architecture exists to avoid.

From here

  • How mentoring works

What people are formed here to do, and what it is bounded by.

  • How stewardship works

What a steward may never decide alone, and when their term ends.

  • The Bridge

Where someone formed here ends up: one relationship, with an agreed purpose and a designed ending.

  • The whole map

The fourteen places, and how they fit.

  • Talk to a person

That place says plainly whether anyone is currently bound to answer.
