The centre
where this sits →The Hearth.
Where you are known — about ten people, a guide, and the one place in this world you return to from everywhere else.
Inside membership — a Hearth is a named group of real people, so it sits behind the crossing. What it is, how it is protected and why it is kept small is published here for anyone, because it is the single thing most worth judging this whole architecture by.
This is the most important place in the Hub. Everything else — the practice, the Library, the mentoring, the service — is built to feed something that only happens between a handful of people who know each other by name. If this fails, nothing else compensates for it, and no amount of good material anywhere else would.
Why it is this small
Six to fifteen people. That is not a starting size to be grown out of; it is the size, permanently, and the architecture is built to defend it.
- Small is the default. The Hearth is the primary unit of belonging, not a subdivision of something larger.
- Growth happens by multiplying Hearths, never by enlarging them.
- When a Hearth outgrows its size, it splits — and the split is celebrated, because it means a new guide was formed.
- Every member is in exactly one Hearth, and may be in many practice groups.
- Every Hearth has a guide, and every guide has a steward.
- Every Hearth is developing its next guide. A Hearth that cannot split is one that failed to multiply.
What actually happens in one
Not a class, not a support group, not a mastermind. Five ordinary things, done repeatedly, with the same people.
Honesty
Saying how it is actually going, to people who will still be there next time. This is the whole foundation, and everything below depends on it.
Encouragement
Specific rather than general. Aimed at what the person is actually attempting.
Accountability
Agreed by you, held by people you chose to be held by. Never imposed, never scored.
First contributions
The first thing you give to someone else almost always happens here, and it is usually small.
Witness of small wins
The step that looks like nothing from outside is seen by people who know what it cost you.
What it protects
The Hearth is the default home of honesty, which only works if what is said in it stays in it. Nothing travels outward from here without the consent of the person it belongs to — not to the Table, not to the Commons, not into a story, not into a summary, and not to a steward. The one room further in than this is the Quiet Room, which nobody reads at all.
No Hearth is running
There is no group meeting, nobody is guiding one, and no member belongs to one — because the crossing has never been made by anyone. There is no list of Hearths on this page, no example group, no invented members and no capacity to report.
A Hearth needs two real things that do not exist yet: enough people who have genuinely crossed, and a guide formed well enough to hold them. When both exist, the first Hearth will be small, named, and real, and this page will describe it rather than describe the idea of it.
