The working ground

where this sits →

The Table.

Where people talk with each other — the whole community in one room, rather than each small group quietly becoming its own world.

Inside membership — the conversation itself sits behind the crossing, because it is people speaking about their actual lives and that needs a bounded room. What the Table is for, and what it is held to, is on this page for anyone.

A community of small groups will silo without something deliberate holding it together. The Table is that deliberate thing. It exists so a question asked in one group can be answered by someone three seasons ahead in another, and so no group has to rediscover alone what the room next door already learned.

What it is for

  • The question you think is too basic

Asked out loud, in front of everyone, and answered without anyone being made small for asking it. A community where the basic question is embarrassing is a community that has stopped being useful.

  • Cross-pollination

What one small group learned the hard way, carried to the others, so it is learned once rather than six times.

  • Disagreement, held well

Real disagreement across seasons and experience. Not comment-thread conflict, and not enforced agreement either.

How conflict is handled

Conflict here is architecture, not accident. There is a defined path, it is published in advance, and using it is normal rather than a complaint.

  1. Directly, between the people involved, wherever that is possible and safe.
  2. With the guide of the group, if it is not.
  3. With the steward of the place it happened in.
  4. With the Council, when it exceeds a steward’s scope.

What this place is held to

  • Restoration is the goal. Removal exists, and is used when people must be protected.
  • Protection outranks openness. The vulnerable are protected even at the cost of someone else’s freedom of expression.
  • Nothing said here travels further out without the consent of the person who said it.
  • Newcomers are always someone’s specific responsibility — never “the community’s”.
  • No unanswered question is treated as acceptable background noise. An unanswered question is a health warning.

No conversation is running

There is no thread here, no discussion, no archive of past questions and nobody at the Table — because there are no members yet. Nothing is being simulated in the meantime: no seeded questions, no example exchanges, no imagined participants.

This page is the rules of the room, published before the room fills, so that the first people through the door find a standard already set rather than one invented around them. Talking here becomes possible when there are people to talk with, and not one day before.

  • How belonging works

The circles this room sits inside, and what each one protects.

  • The Workshop

Where the thing being discussed here is actually attempted. Its practices are open today.

  • The Library, open shelf

Where a settled answer goes so it need not be re-argued. Open, with no account.

  • The whole map

The fourteen places, and how they fit.

  • Talk to a person

That place says plainly whether anyone is currently bound to answer.
